Virginia Tech Student Paper Sues State Police for Documents

By: Virginia Tech's student newspaper is suing the West Virginia State Police to obtain documents related to the investigation of a student's disappearance in 1998.

The lawsuit filed by Educational Media Co., operator of The Collegiate Times, seeks to enforce a Freedom of Information Act request for State Police records on missing student Robert Kovack. The State Police denied the newspaper's request.

The 24-year-old Kovack's vehicle was found along U.S. 19 near the New River Gorge Bridge in September 1998.

Sgt. Mike Baylous, a State Police spokesman, declined comment Friday on the lawsuit. It was filed May 19 in Kanawha County Circuit Court.
