By: Suffolk police are investigating the fatal shooting of a newspaper carrier as he was making deliveries.

City spokesman Debbie George says 50-year-old John Price of Suffolk was killed at about 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Price had worked as a contractor for The Virginian-Pilot for more than three years.

McRay Lehman of Suffolk said he and his wife heard three or four gunshots. His wife called 911 and he went outside and walked to the end of his driveway. He says he saw Price on his back in the street near a minivan, holding a newspaper in one hand.

Bill Johnson, the newspaper's home delivery manager, says Price delivered more than 200 newspapers daily to subscribers on two routes.
