By: E&P Staff The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk is laying off 30 more employees, including six from the newsroom, while suspending print publication of a free arts and entertainment weekly and folding a monthly paper about multicultural issues.
In a story by Philip Walzer, the Virginian-Pilot reported that 10 of the employees laid off worked at Port Folio, the 26-year-old weekly that will suspend print publication after next week?s edition, and Mix, a free monthly launched in 2007.
Port Folio?s Web site, portfolioweekly.com will continue to operate, Pilot President and Publisher Maurice Jones said.
Jones said a print edition might be revived when the economy turns around, and that Thursday editions of the Pilot might be expanded to accommodate material that went into the free-standing publication.
Mix, the multicultural magazine, will fold after the March issue.
Both publications lost money, Jones said.
Among the 30 layoffs are eight employees in online operations, and six in other departments, according to the paper.
The Pilot has taken previous measures to reduce costs. Late last year, the newspaper and sibling enterprises cut 150 positions, about 12% of the work force. Link, a free daily targeting young adults, was folded, and in January, the Pilot shrunk the number of pages by 8% and eliminated the business section every day but Sundays.
