By: Greg Mitchell For days it was a giant mystery, then a target of jokes on TV and the the Web: South Carolina's governor Mark Sanford, pulling a Waldo, had gone missing. Even his wife didn't know where he was and he had left his state leaderless.
Then it turned out, according to his staff, that he was simply walking the Appalachian Trail, out of touch, re-charging his batteries after tough work.
Yesterday, media outlets reported that his car had been spotted by one source at the Atlanta airport. This was enough to send The State's Gina Smith there for something of a stakeout and sure enough she spotted the governor returning from somewhere.
Perhaps surprised, he admitted to her that he'd been in Argentina all week-- a good distance from the Trail. He said he wanted some place more "exotic" and perhaps his staff mentioned the Trail because he had considered going there.
Of course, this doesn't clear up charges of dereliction of duty from his governor's duties, with absolutely no one knowing where he was.
