By: E&P Staff Just before he formally took ownership of The Wall Street Journal, News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch mused that he might scrap the paper's increasingly uncommon model of charging for most of its online content.
On Thursday, the Journal took a big step in that direction, announcing a new Web site for its editorial page that offers free access to all editorials and op-ed columns, plus other commentary, book reviews, and arts and leisure coverage.
"It's as close as we'll get to conceding there is such a thing as a free lunch," the Journal said on its
Web site.
Some Journal editorial page content has always been free on OpinionJournal.com, which also featured some Web-only content.
"As of today, those two sites will merge and become a single free site for all Journal opinion, both in the U.S. and overseas editions, book reviews and leisure and arts," the Journal said.
Users can access the material through
OpinionJournal.com.
"We're delighted to offer our world-wide readers access to our message of free people and free markets -- for free," the paper said.
