Wash. Post Co. Reports Online Revenue Gains

By: The Washington Post Co. joined the list of newspaper publishers reporting gains in their new-media divisions during the third quarter.

Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive said revenues from online publishing activities (mostly washingtonpost.com) were $9.1 million in the third quarter, versus $7.7 million in the year-ago period. For the first nine months of 2002, online revenue was $25.3 million, versus $23.1 million during the same period last year.

The Washington Post Co. reported total revenues for the quarter of $640.3 million, up 8% from $592.3 million a year ago.

Online advertising revenues jumped 51% in the third quarter and 50% for the first nine months of 2002, the company said. Even the washingtonpost.com Jobs section saw a revenue increase of 11% during the quarter, though the section was down 6% for the first nine months. In print, the Post saw a $26.1 million decline in recruitment advertising revenue in the first nine months.
