'Wash. Post' Site Names Best Political Blogs

By: E&P Staff Washingtonpost.com today announced the winners in its Best Blogs Politics and Elections Readers' Choice Awards competition, and National Review Online's "The Corner" was the big winner, nabbing top honors in four of 10 categories.

The competition at The Washington Post's Web site allowed readers of the site to nominate their favorite Web logs in each of the 10 categories, and, later, to vote for their favorite for each category among the top five nominees. The nominating period ran from July 26 through Sept. 3, 2004, and the voting period was from Sept. 27 though Oct. 15. Winners were announced at noon today.

National Review Online's The Corner was the winner in the "Best Rant," "Best Democratic Party Coverage," "Best Republican Party Coverage" and "Best Inside the Beltway" categories. Another National Review Online blog, "Kerry Spot," won the "Best Campaign Dirt Category."

The only other blog to win in multiple categories was Instapundit.com, which won for "Most Likely to Last Beyond Election" and "Best Outside the Beltway."

Other winners were Little Green Footballs for "Best International," ScrappleFace for "Class Clown," and Lileks.com for "Most Original." Some of the better-known blogs in the competition, like Wonkette, Andrew Sullivan, Talking Points Memo, and Daily Kos, won only honorable mentions.
