Sean Gardner’s luck ran out as a fugitive because his girlfriend is a reader of The Washington Examiner.

Gardner had been on the run for three years when the Examiner featured him as a “Most Wanted” fugitive in its Aug. 12 issue. As it happens, Gardner’s girlfriend read the story, but he said it wasn’t true.

According to a story in Thursday’s Examiner by staff writer Scott McCabe, the girlfriend contacted the U.S. Marshals Service and after talking with them convinced Gardner to turn himself in rather than face more charges. Gardner was wanted on convictions for transporting and dealing guns across state lines.

"It ended up being the perfect tip, and this guy has been returned to justice,"  Eric Mellette of the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force told the newspaper.

The Examiner said Gardner’s surrender was at least the 21st time a fugitive was put behind bars after being featured as a "Most Wanted" fugitive.
