By: E&P Staff Washington Monthly (WM) has just posted a piece about Bob Herbert that asks why The New York Times columnist isn't more widely read and admired.
T.A. Frank, a WM editor, notes in his article that Herbert does a lot of reporting and is almost always right on the issues. "When the majority loses its bearings, Herbert sticks with the sane minority," he adds.
So why isn't Herbert held in higher esteem? Among the reasons Frank gives is that Herbert champions the powerless at a time when many people don't want to read about the powerless, and that the Times writer is not as much of a prose stylist as some other columnists.
