Washington 'Olympian' Faces More Cuts, Just as Exec. Editor Retires

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Olympian in Washington is moving to a 37.5-hour workweek for all its hourly employees, and is eliminating some newsroom positions for the second time since June.

Publisher John Winn Miller announced the cutbacks in an e-mail to staff, and later explained the company's buyout offers to 38 of the newsroom's 45 full- and part-time print and online employees. According to the paper?s report, there was no specific quota or target number of job losses to be achieved through the buyouts.

In June the Olympian cut 17 positions, including four in news and online operations. The paper also has consolidated advertising, technology and circulation departments with the McClatchy-owned News Tribune of Tacoma.

The cuts come as the Olympian newsroom is losing Executive Editor Vickie Kilgore, who is retiring Friday for personal reasons.
