'Washington Post' Cites "Miscommunication" in Pulling 'Doonesbury' Buyout Strips

Posted
By: Joe Strupp The Washington Post, which started re-running a September ?Doonesbury? series of strips last week that had referred to the Post?s 2008 job cutbacks, withheld the Wednesday and Thursday strips, citing a ?newsroom miscommunication,? according to an Editor?s Note that ran Friday.

The series of strips was significant to the Post because it included the buyout of Doonesbury character Rick Redfern, a fictional Post employee.

The Post?s comic strip blog, ?Comic Riffs,? posted the missing strips on Thursday, while they were reprinted in Friday?s paper.

Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli told The New York Times that ?it is good not to appear thin-skinned, though the substitution drew minimal attention.?

The Times added: ?according to newsroom officials at The Post, Mr. Brauchli asked early last week whether it was the paper or the syndicate that had chosen to rerun the series about buyouts. These officials, who declined to be named for fear of appearing to embarrass a colleague, said that an editor apparently interpreted the question to mean that Mr. Brauchli had objected to the strips.?

Brauchli later declined to discuss specifics, but told the Times there had been ?an innocent misunderstanding,? and added, ?as soon as it was brought to my attention, we corrected the error.?
