Washington Post Co.'s Online Revenue Up 24% in Q3

By: Jay DeFoore The Washington Post Co. said revenue generated by the company's online activities increased 24% to $19.8 million for the third quarter of 2005.

That number includes Slate.com, which was acquired in January 2005. The Washington Post Co. reported revenue of $15.9 million in the third quarter of 2004.


Over the first nine months of 2005, online revenues are up 24% to $55.5 million, compared to $44.7 million in the first nine months of 2004.

Local and national online advertising revenues grew 32% and 36% for the third quarter and first nine months of 2005, respectively. Online classified advertising revenue on washingtonpost.com increased 26% in the third quarter of 2005 and 22% for the first nine months of 2005.

Overall, Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive's online gains offset declines in the company's newspaper publishing division. The company's total Q3 profit fell 19%, weighed down by hurricane-related charges and lost revenue at its cable division.
