By: E&P Staff Longtime Washington Post TV critic Tom Shales will leave his post to write a new weekly Style column. Longtime Post Style writer Hank Stuever will be his replacement as daily TV critic.

The changes, announced in an internal memo authored by Style editors Lynn Medford and Ned Martel, will take effect Aug. 10.

"In his new column, Tom takes on a broader role of culture critic, writing not just on all things television but from a 30,000-foot perspective on our culture and the forces that shape it," Medford and Martel wrote. "Tom will illuminate, pontificate and eviscerate, on TV and other subjects."

Shales has been the Post's chief television critic since 1977, and became TV Editor in 1979. Stuever has worked at the Style section since 1999.

[Stuever] has distinguished himself as an astute and colorful observer of
popular culture," wrote Medford and Martel. "He is a thinker and writer who can take on almost any assignment and dissect its deep and complex meanings in compelling ways.

"Tom will continue to cover many of the big televised events, such as State of the Union speeches, the Super Bowl, the Academy Awards and the Emmys," according to the memo, which goes on to say that Shales will add a Web chat and a blog to his new column.
