By: E&P Staff Milton Coleman, senior editor of The Washington Post, was elected president of the American Society of News Editors (ASNE) Wednesday, succeeding Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Editor Marty Kaiser.
Coleman said ASNE will be taking a more practical and technological approach to it work.
"ASNE will be an organization that interacts with its members far more frequently than in the past, with useful and practical information to help you lead," he told attendees at its annual convention in Washington, D.C. "The new technology will not be just something we talk about, but something we do - regularly and at times, almost exclusively. There will be an ongoing online program to better move us as an organization at the faster pace of communication today."
Ken Paulson, president and chief operating officer of the Newseum and Freedom Forum, was elected vice president. Susan Goldberg, editor of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland was elected secretary, and David Boardman, executive editor of The Seattle Times, treasurer.
Five directors were elected to the ASNE board, which is comprised of the four officers, the past president,15 elected members and two appointed members who represent online editors.
Elected to the board for three-year terms were Ronnie Agnew, executive editor, The Clarion-Ledger, Jackson, Miss.; Pamela Fine, Knight Chair in News, The University of Kansas, Lawrence; Anders Gyllenhaal, executive editor, The Miami Herald; Michael Oreskes, senior managing editor, The Associated Press, New York; and Melanie A. Sill, editor, The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee.
