Weak April Hurts Tribune Co. Revenue

By: (AP) Tribune Co. on Thursday said its revenue fell slightly last month from the year before, hurt by weak demand for advertising at its publications and television stations.

Consolidated revenue totaled $437.4 million in April, down 2% from $447.4 million a year earlier. By segment, publishing revenue slipped half a percent to $317 million, while broadcast revenue dropped 7% to $120.4 million.

In its publishing group, ad sales grew 1% to $249.7 million as total volume remained flat at 3.1 million inches. An 8% increase in classified-ad revenue offset a 7% decrease in national ads, while retail ads were flat at $98.3 million, the company said.

Circulation revenue also sank 9% to $46.7 million from $51.2 million last year because of shrinking sales volume of its newspapers, Tribune added.

Meanwhile, a soft ad market sent television revenue 7% lower to $99.7 million. Radio revenue fell 4% to $20.7 million as the company produced fewer syndicated shows, Tribune said.

For the 17 weeks ended April 24, revenue was down 2% to $1.75 billion, with newspaper ad revenue up 2% to $1.04 billion, television down 6% to $389.8 million and radio falling 7% to $40.8 million.
