Weakness in Florida Pulls Down Media General

By: E&P Staff Media General reported that total revenue in July fell 3.3% to $83.8 million, year-over-year. Total revenue at the company's publishing division was down 6.8% to $49.3 million.

At the interactive media division, revenue climbed 37.4% to $3.5 million.

"Publishing Division revenues, while disappointing overall and continuing to reflect difficulties in our Florida markets, showed some positive signs in the month," Marshall N. Morton, president and CEO of the Richmond, Va.-based company, said in a statement. "Our Richmond, Northern Virginia, Southwest Virginia and Alabama markets all generated year-over-year growth."

Newspaper advertising revenue plunged 8.5% to $3.8 million mostly on the weakness of its Tampa daily.

Retail advertising revenue slipped 1.6% to $310,000. National advertising revenue declined 11.7% to $430,000. Classified advertising revenue tumbled 14.3% to $2.9 million.

Circulation revenue inched up 0.2% to $7.3 million.
