By: Ann M. Mack More Companies Spend Advertising Dollars Online
(Adweek IQ) Despite a dismal third quarter for many Internet
firms, the number of new advertisers on the Web has almost
doubled since the first quarter. According to a report issued
this week by Seattle-based AdRelevance, the third quarter saw
5,489 companies advertising online for the first time, surpassing
the first quarter tally of 2,935 new advertisers, and the second
quarter total of 3,879.
Since January, the number of new online advertisers has increased
by 157%, growing at an average rate of 14% per month, the study
says. About 949 companies advertised on the Web for the first
time in January, compared to 2,443 companies in October.
While traditional advertisers accounted for about 41% of the top
100 new online advertisers in January, they made up close to 50%
in October, with dot-coms rounding out the other half.
Planet Project, a global polling company, was ranked as the No. 1
new advertiser for October, running a campaign with 110 million
impressions. Other top advertisers included Major League Soccer
(30 million impressions), Norelco (16 million), Saks Fifth Avenue
(11 million), 1800Luggage.com (9.2 million), mailsweeps.com (6.8
million), and education.com (7.5 million).
