WEB SITE CHRONICLES NEWSPAPER JOB LOSSES

It's been a challenge to keep up with the layoffs and cutbacks at
newspapers this year. The Poynter Institute of St. Petersburg,
Fla., is now chronicling the industry's downsizing at
Crunch Times.

Compiled by Poynter's Ellen Sung, the site offers a layoff chart,
related news stories, and information about job openings.

Poynter's Online Editor and Marketing Director Bill Mitchell said
the site evolved out of the Jay Harris resignation controversy.
Poynter.org devoted a page to Harris' resignation as publisher of
the San Jose Mercury News. "The story is clearly about a
lot more than Jay Harris or Knight Ridder, though, so we figured
it would be a good idea to expand the focus accordingly to Crunch
Times," Mitchell said.
