'Weekly Reader' Editor Arrested for Soliciting Sex with Minor

By: E&P Staff Noel Neff, an editor for the Weekly Reader newspaper for schoolchildren, was arrested in a mall parking lot for allegedly soliciting sex from a minor on the Internet.

Neff, 46, an editor at the Weekly Reader Corp., in Stamford, Conn., was arrested Saturday in the parking lot, where he had arranged a meeting with a minor for sex, authorities told the MetroWest Daily News of Framingham.

Articles at the Web site for the Weekly Reader newspaper list Neff as editor or "staff editor." He was listed as editor when he covered this year's Super Bowl, and last year's Republican convention in New York, for Weekly Reader.

He remained in custody Tuesday while he awaits an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Boston, FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz said. Neff faces two charges related to using "the Internet with the intent to travel to have sex with a minor," Marcinkiewicz said.

Weekly Reader Corp. publishes magazines and periodicals for students, including Weekly Reader, a newspaper for children in elementary grades. It also publishes Teen Newsweek, Current Events, Current Health, and Career World.

Mia Toschi, a Weekly Reader Corp. spokeswoman, said the company employs an editor named Noel Neff from Norwalk, Conn., but said company officials had been unable to reach him.

A Web search indicates that Neff also freelanced for newspapers, such as the St. Petersburg Times, which in 2001 listed him as a writer based in Norwalk.
