West Virginia Paper Gets National Attention in Coal Mine Accident

Posted
By: E&P Staff The still photo that flashed most often across cable and network news shows covering the coal mine disaster in West Virginia was taken by a reporter for a small paper in that state.

The credit belongs to Becky Wagoner of the Elkins paper, the Inter-Mountain, whose slogan is, "Serving Central West Virginia for More Than a Century."

Wagoner and her colleague Cari Jodoin filed their first news report shortly after the mining accident, just after 9 a.m. Monday morning, which appeared on the paper's Web site with the now-familiar picture of family members, police and rescue workers on a road near the mine.

Thirteen workers are still stuck down below in the Spruce Fork Mine in Upshur County.
