By: E&P Staff Western Illinois University will host three exhibitions on political art starting next week. The exhibits will run simultaneously from Oct. 28 through Nov. 20.
?Politics and the People? is an exhibition featuring paintings by Thomas Jackson, who was inspired by media coverage of news and political campaigns. ?The Clinton Years? is an exhibition of political cartoons by Jim Allen and distributed by Chicago Sun-Times Features.
The third, ?Political Cartoons Past and Present,? will feature presidential cartoons by cartoonist Dr. Jim Allen. It will include an original drawing of Lincoln by Thomas Nast with a woodcuts from Harpers Magazine. Also, Goya and Daumier prints will be on display as well as multiple originals from more than 20 political cartoonists. Among them are John Fischetti, Frank Miller, Tom Englehardt, Guernsey LePelley, Bill Sanders, Bob Zschieshe, Mike Peters, and Ed Stein.
The cartoonist panel discussion will be the second WIU has hosted. The first was held in 1973 with known cartoonists Guernsey Le Pelley, Frank Miller, John Fishetti, and Jay Lynch. Unable to make the first panel, Tom Engelhardt will join the discussion this year. Other panelists include Jeff Koterba, R.J. Matson, Flenn McCoy, and Gary McCoy. It will hosted by WIU Journalism professor Bill Knight and Dr. Allen on Nov. 12 starting at 1:30 pm.
Dr. Allen will also host a gallery walk for ?Political Cartoons Past and Present? and ?The Clinton Years? on election night, Tuesday Nov. 4, at 7pm.
