By: E&P Staff On Tuesday night's "Charlie Rose" show on PBS, in a segment on the Valerie Plame/CIA leak probe, attorney Floyd Abrams said that if Judith Miller and Matt Cooper "have to go to jail it will be a defeat and the world will change....We have a history of not putting reporters in jail, and that is changing."
Abrams is representing Miller and Cooper in the next stage of their case, an appeal that will be heard one week from today.
Also on the program, Miller said, "The public is best served" if sources believe they can turn to her "and I will protect their confidentiality." She said she was willing to go to over this but hoped it did not happen.
Abrams said that even the reporter who first printed the identity of CIA operative Plame "should be protected. I don't have a Novak exception."
Washington Post columnist Richad Cohen agreed, with a laugh, saying, "This hurts, but I think even Novak needs to be protected. He was just doing his job."
