By: E&P Staff Former Cincinnati Enquirer President and Publisher Harry Whipple, 56, was named president and CEO of the Newspaper Agency Corp. (NAC) in Salt Lake City. He replaces Joseph H. Zerbey IV, who is leaving NAC to become vice president of operations for Media News Group Inc.'s East Coast newspapers.

The appointment was announced by William Dean Singleton, vice chairman and CEO of MediaNews in Denver and NAC chairman, and Glen Snarr, vice chairman of NAC and chairman of The Deseret News Publishing Co. MediaNews owns The Salt Lake Tribune and operates the joint operating agreement with the Deseret Morning News.

In Cincinnati, Whipple was responsible for the JOA between Gannett Co. Inc.'s Enquirer and the Cincinnati Post, owned by The E.W. Scripps Co. Gannett recently announced that it won't renew that JOA when it expires in December 2007.

Prior to taking over the Cincinnati JOA in 1992, Whipple was president of the JOA in Tucson, Ariz., between Gannett and Pulitzer Inc.

In a statement, Singleton said he was "excited to bring a newspaper executive with such extensive JOA experience to the fast growing Salt Lake City market."

Whipple started his career working with his family's small dailies in Arkansas and Indiana. He later worked for Scripps and Gannett in Pennsylvania, Illinois and West Virginia.
