By: E&P Staff Manager Ozzie Guillen of the Chicago White Sox unleashed a string of invective at a Chicago Sun-Times reporter Jay Mariotti before last night's game, including profanity and a slur associated with homosexuality, The Chicago Tribune reports.
Mariotti's paper fired back today with a
column by fellow reporter Greg Couch.
"The job of a sports columnist is to have an opinion," Couch wrote. "Opinions don't always set [sic] well with people."
After listing numerous instances in which Guillen's behavior has crossed the line (including an instance in which the manager berated a pitcher who refused to hit a player with a pitch), Couch demanded action from both Guillen and the baseball league's commissioner.
"[Guillen] was wrong. And he needs to apologize. And he needs to be suspended. Are you listening Bud Selig?"
According to Couch's column, the feud between Mariotti and Guillen was due to the reporter's hard-hitting coverage of Guillen's managerial decisions. Guillen took these criticisms personally, and lashed back at Mariotti with the offensive epithets.
"He's not going to run me out of town," Guillen responded in the Tribune. "He can kiss my ass. He'll lose his job before I lose mine. I guarantee that ?"
Thus far, Mariotti has not commented on the incident.
