By: Steve Yahn Paper Currently Operates In JOA With Deseret News
Speculation that The Deseret News, owned by the Mormon Church, might have its eye on acquiring its rival, The Salt Lake Tribune, owned by the AT&T Corp., surfaced last week.
Currently, all but the editorial operations of the two papers are run by the Newspaper Agency Corp., which administers their joint operating agreement.
The Salt Lake Tribune Publishing Co., a management company operating the paper under an agreement with AT&T, claims it has an option to buy the paper in 2002.
The Tribune, circulation 138,038, is a morning paper; the News, circulation 68,996, is an afternoon paper.
Steve Yahn (syahn@editorandpublisher.com) is executive editor of E&P.
