By: E&P Staff Winners of the Will Rogers Writing Contest sponsored by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists (NSNC) have been announced.
George Waters of Pasadena, Calif., won first place with an essay, "A 21st Century Rope Trick," that humorously comments on high technology in today's society. E. Mitchell of Palatine, Ill., finished second with an entry titled "Sick of Germs," about bird flu and other new diseases. And Marie Hawk of Oroville, Wash., placed third with "Happy Trails," which relates to threats from spinach and other farm crops.

Waters wins a free $250 registration to the
Will Rogers Writers' Workshop, which will be held March 15-17, 2007, in Oklahoma City. Mitchell gets a half-price registration worth $125, and Hawk a $50 discount on the registration fee.
The Rogers workshop -- directed by columnist Robert L. Haught of The Oklahoman in Oklahoma City -- is being presented by the NSNC in partnership with the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop in Dayton, Ohio.
