former Associated Press photo editor, died April 25 in Pottstown, Pa. In the course of his career, he supervised photo coverage of the Korean War, civil rights marches in Alabama, and Latin American revolutions. Under his leadership, three AP photographers were awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Achatz began his career in 1931 at The Mercury, in Pottstown, Pa., covering crime and government for 10 years. He then joined the Marine Corps to serve in WWII, after which he was hired by the AP as a photographer in Harrisburg. He later moved to Philadelphia to become photo editor for Pennsylvania. He retired in 1976.
