Wisconsin Lawsuit Over Newspaper Game Rights Postponed

By: A federal lawsuit filed by Wisconsin's high school athletic association against a newspaper trade group and a media company has been delayed until June.

Magistrate Judge Stephen L. Crocker gave a recent order requiring the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, the Wisconsin Newspaper Association and Gannett Co. until this Friday to finalize a June date to start a trial after both sides said Feb. 8 wouldn't work.

Crocker noted that neither party explained why they couldn't meet the original trial's deadlines, but granted the move anyway. The trial is expected to last a week.

The WIAA is asking a court to rule it has exclusive ownership rights to Web streaming games after a Gannett-owned newspaper, The Post-Crescent in Appleton, streamed several postseason games last year.
