By: Chris Hardie has been named editor of the La Crosse Tribune, where he started his career 25 years ago as a part-time sports writer.

Hardie replaces John Smalley, who was named the top editor of the Wisconsin State Journal in December. The Wisconsin State Journal in Madison is the state's second largest newspaper.

Hardie worked as a part-time sports writer at the La Crosse Tribune while a student at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He returned to the newspaper in 1990, working as a reporter and editor. He was named publisher of the newspaper's weekly newspaper group in 2002.

The Tribune is owned by Lee Enterprises of Davenport, Iowa, which also owns half of Capital Newspapers, the publisher of the State Journal.
