By: E&P Staff The Kansas City Star reported yesterday that it has settled with companies that went unpaid for their work on its new production plant after The Austin Co., the paper's general contractor, filed for bankruptcy protection.
The project was not bonded, leaving the Star responsible for unpaid work.
Production Vice President Randy Waters told Star reporter Dan Margolies that confidential settlements were negotiated for more than half the almost $4 million owed contractors and subcontractors. The largest settlement was reached with an electrical contractor owed almost $1 million.
Kansas City-based engineering firm Burns & McDonnell has taken over as general contractor on the project (E&P Online, Jan. 5). The $200 million, 430,000-square-foot facility is expected to open in June.
