By: E&P Staff Citizen journalism may be a rising force in the U.S. but gained a more urgent meaning this afternoon when www.nytimes.com published at the top of its site a photograph of a (banned?) protest in Pakistan. A crackdown on demonstrations, and certain news and Internet services, there had caused the paper to issue a call for user contributions, in photo or even video form.
The photographer of the picture that appeared "said that it was taken today at a student protest at the Lahore University of Management Sciences," the site explained.
It has described its call this way: "With opposition protests blocked by the authorities in Pakistan, NYTimes.com is asking readers in Pakistan to help us report on events in the country by sending us eyewitness accounts of protests in photographs, video or text.
"To submit a picture, please send it by e-mail to the following address: world.nyt@gmail.com ? and let us know when and where the photograph was taken and what it depicts. Please also include your name, but if you would prefer not to be identified, let us know that as well.
"To submit written descriptions of events, please use the comments field at the foot of this page. To submit video, please use the form below and provide the same information."
