Britain's Mirror Group Newspapers announced Friday that it plans to introduce multimedia newsrooms to the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and People.
The announcement follows implementation of ContentWatch, the Web-based content-management system from Mediaspectrum, Burlington, Mass. The new system and processes enable production of quality content across multiple channels while ensuring each title retains its identity. Each Mirror Group title retains its own editor.
The senior editorial team's plan to transform its newsrooms includes: outsourcing elements of copyediting; merging news and features on each title into single content units, creating super pools of reporters and writers; and merging digital and print publishing teams while ending editionizing Mirror titles in Scotland.
The changes anticipate a loss of approximately 200 editorial jobs across the three titles. Mirror Group said, however, that "a significant number" are casual workers rather than employees. Now consulting with staffers likely to be affected, the company also is looking for voluntary buyouts.
"Our traditional skills and processes have to change to embrace the emerging platforms and keep our titles in good health," Daily Mirror Richard Wallace said in a statement.
