WoodWing's New Smart Connection Modules

Posted
By: E&P Staff WoodWing Software, of Zaadam, the Netherlands, developer of Adobe InCopy and InDesign plug-in software, introduced the Web Overview Module for Smart Connection Pro CS and three free production add-ons.

The Web Overview Module offers digital publication outlines that can be viewed from any Web browser. The optional add-on shows a publication's pages in thumbnail format. It generates both thumbnail and low-resolution images of each page, allowing a quick overview of the complete publication or a zoomed-in view of each page or spread.

The module consists of an InDesign plug-in that generates the preview images and manages the publication and issue metadata. A set of customizable server pages presents the overview to the browser. The server pages contain PHP scripts, which offer users tools and options to customize or add to the core functionality. For example, a script can be written enabling an editor to approve specific pages of the publication rapidly and directly in the browser.

The Web Overview Module is easy can be used straight out of the box without modification or complex configuration, and it is available for Macintosh and Windows through WoodWing resellers.

Smart Connection is available in Light, Pro, and Enterprise versions suited to varying publication size and complexity.

WoodWing also released the Smart Connection (SC) PowerPack, a suite of three add-on modules--Remote and InCopy Layers for SC Light, Pro and Enterprise, and InCopy Frames for SC Pro and Enterprise--which can be downloaded for free online and will be included with all future SC sales.

With the Remote Module installed in both InCopy and InDesign, writers can create InCopy documents that contain all information needed to write to fit, including page previews. They can then e-mail the InCopy documents to a designer, who can apply the changes in InDesign, freeing writers from the need to be linked to the larger InDesign document.

InCopy Layers simplifies work on multiple versions of a document by allowing writers working in InCopy to see and select the layers within an InDesign file. The layers can be turned on and off as needed during writing and editing.

InCopy Frames consists of two plug-ins designed to help users modify dimensions of frames while editing. The first works with InCopy, allowing writers to change frame size. The other, for InDesign, allows designers to apply changes and frame modifications made in InCopy when a story is refreshed.
