Worcester ?Telegram & Gazete? Begins Charging for Local Online Content

The Worcester (Mass.) Telegram & Gazette today joins the ranks of those newspapers engaging in the Great Paywall Experiment.

The New York Times Co.-owned T&G has begun requiring all users to register, and is charging online readers who are not print subscribers (who will get online access as part of their sub) for locally produced content. Wire-produced content will remain free.

Online readers who do not subscribe to the print product will be allowed to read up to 10 staff-produced articles per month. After that, they are asked to pay a fee — either a monthly charge of $14.95 or $1 for a one-day pass.

The T&G’s parent company will surely be watching the results of this metered model closely to gather intel for the rollout of The New York Times’ paid model in 2011.
