By: Omaha World-Herald publisher John Gottschalk says he will end his 18-year run as the newspaper's publisher and chief executive of the Omaha World-Herald Company on January 1st.
Over the past 22 years, Gottschalk led a significant expansion of the company, which now owns 28 newspapers and a direct mail firm.
Gottschalk bought his first newspaper, the Sidney (Neb.) Telegraph, at age 23. After selling the Telegraph in 1975, he joined the World-Herald. He became president in 1985 and has held his current positions since 1989.
Gottschalk serves on the boards of three other companies.
The company's board chose company President Terry Kroeger to be the next publisher and CEO. The 64-year-old Gottschalk will remain chairman of the board.
