Commercial and publication printer Worldcolor chose the Kodak Prosper 5000XL press with an integrated Muller Martini inline finishing system for its Dubuque, Iowa, operations. Kodak is launching the 5000XL model at the Ipex trade show, which opens Tuesday in Birmingham, England.
Besides printing short-run color and black and white books, the installation later this year will produce versioned and variable magazines, catalogs and high-end direct mail. The company also prints retail ad inserts. The press will meet demand for variable production that delivers quality reproduction of smaller quantities and quicker turnaround at competitive prices.
Worldcolor will be one of the first users of Kodak's Stream inkjet technology.
Kevin Joyce, Kodak worldwide sales and marketing vice president for digital printing solutions called Prosper "the first digital press delivering offset-class quality, productivity and cost" for a wide range of applications.
The 5000XL press print at up to 650 fpm, with image quality approaching 175 lpi and a monthly duty cycle of up to 120 million A4 pages. It can handle coated (including glossy) and uncoated paper in basis weights ranging from 30 lbs. to 200 lbs.
CN Newsprint, the print arm of U.K. news media company CN Group, has integrated Kodak Stream inkjet technology with its newspaper press, using the Prosper S10 imprinting system (E&P Online, April 26).
