The man who threatened to blow himself up in a locked car he had parked by the front door of Le Journal de Montreal on Monday afternoon (E&P Online), was identified as 59-year-old Jean-Guy Gauthier.

La Presse writer Christiane Desjardins reported that Gauthier appeared in court Wednesday, where he was charged with making threats and possessing a lighter and containers of propane and gasoline. He remained in custody pending a bail hearing.

After working about 30 years in the Journal pressroom, Gauthier had been out on medical leave for the past two years for depression, and was recently classified unable to work, according to the account in La Presse. He also was reported to have had a relationship with a Journal employee who is among those locked out since early last year in a long-running labor dispute.

Calls to the Journal were referred to parent company Quebecor, where Vice President Serge Sasseville declined to comment on the matter.
