'WSJ' Considers Charging for Mobile Edition

Posted
By: Samuel Chamberlain News Corp. is currently conducting a survey of iPhone and Blackberry
users to see if they would be willing to pay a subscription to access the
mobile edition of the Wall Street Journal.

The mobile version is currently free of charge via the Wall Street Journal
iPhone app, which was launched in April, and was downloaded 360,000 times in its first three weeks. By contrast, online subscribers to the Journal pay over $100 annually in subscription fees.

The survey asks users the following question "If full access to Mobile
Reader required a paid subscription, how likely would you be to subscribe?" Users can answer "Definitely," "Probably," "Might or might not," "Probably would not," "Definitely would not."

Murdoch himself is not averse to the idea, as he said back in April at the
app's launch: "People are used to reading everything on the net for free,
and that's going to have to change."
