Another strong quarter of ad revenue gains at The Wall Street
Journal powered second-quarter earnings growth at Dow Jones
& Co. beyond analysts' expectations.
Earnings per share before special items jumped 66% to $1.06. A
consensus estimate of 11 analysts polled by First Call/Thomson
Financial called for 97 cents.
Total company revenue rose 22% in the second quarter to $621.6
million, with publishing revenue up 29% to $420.9 million on a
29.8% increase in ad linage at the Journal.
In the company's electronic publishing division, which includes
Dow Jones Newswires, revenue was up 10% to $108.3 million.
Revenue at WSJ.com rose 68% to $12 million. Paid subscribers
totaled 461,000, a 51% gain. Growth slowed during the quarter,
which Dow Jones said was expected as educational subscriptions
lapsed for the summer. The company said average monthly page
views per user, which it began reporting with this quarter as a
measure of the site's 'stickiness,' totaled 148.
At the company's Ottaway community newspapers, revenue rose 9%
to $92.5 million and the EBITDA margin was up slightly to 33.4%
from 33.1% a year ago.
