'WSJ' May Add Saturday Edition

By: E&P Staff A Dow Jones & Co. spokesperson confirmed that The Wall Street Journal is considering launching a Saturday edition, which was first reported in the New York Post Friday.

The spokesperson told E&P that executives were looking internally at plans for expanding the paper and that adding an extra day to the publication is on the table. The Post reported it could be as soon as 2005. The Journal currently publishes Monday through Friday. Friday's edition contains a Weekend section.

A Saturday edition of the Journal ran from 1889 until 1953, when stocks stopped trading on Saturdays, according to the spokesperson.

For the month of April, advertising lineage for the Journal was up 7.5% and up 9.5% year to date. The paper leans heavily on financial and technology advertising. The financial sector was up in April, 29.7% (42.3% YTD) but technology remains problematic. It dropped 30.6% in April with a 9.5% decrease YTD.
