By: E&P Staff A reporting team for The Wall Street Journal took home the top prize at the Deadline Club's 2004 annual awards dinner in New York Tuesday night.

The James Wright Brown Public Service Award --named after a founder of Editor & Publisher -- and $1,000 (provided by the Brown family) went to Kate Kelly, Susanne Craig, Charles Gasparino, Ianthe Jeanne Dugan, Deborah Solomon, Greg Ip, and Laurie P. Cohen for their series on governance of the New York Stock Exchange.

Alan Wolper, contributing editor for E&P, was one of three finalists for Best Personal Column, which was won by Phil Reisman of The Journal News in White Plains, N.Y. Joe Klein was the other finalist.

The Record of Hackensack, N.J., and The Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J., shared the Daniel Pearl Award for Investigative Reporting, in both cases for their coverage of the state's "pay for play" state government.

The Deadline Club is the New York City chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Andy Rooney of CBS was guest speaker. Reliving his days covering World War II for Stars & Stripes, Rooney said, "In London, they warned us about air raids in advance. Nowadays you're lucky if the Pentagon tells you about a raid after it happens." He closed by saying that he had a lot of friends but the ones he has the most fun with are journalists. Then Rooney, 85, walked out alone, briskly, with no assistance, into the mass of humanity near Times Square to hail a cab home.

Other winners included Newsday's Joseph Dolman for editorial writing, the Star-Ledger's Drew Sheneman for editorial cartooning, The New York Times' N.R. Kleinfeld for best feature reporting, Newsday's Moises Saman for best spot news photo (from Baghdad), and The Associated Press' Rodrigo Abd for best feature photo (from Gautemala).
