By: The Wyoming State Library is making the state's old newspapers available online.
The Wyoming Newspaper Project launched its online archive Monday. It has a searchable database of about 340 different newspapers dating from 1849 to 1922.
The Web site contains 407,000 full newspaper pages, and the State Library is working to expand the database to incorporate about 960,000 pages total.
State Librarian Lesley Boughton (BOW'-ton) says the project has cost about $1.4 million so far, including about $1 million in legislatively appropriated funds. The pages were scanned from microfilm at the State Archives.
The online archive includes such defunct publications as The Cheyenne Daily Leader, The Laramie Sentinel the South Pass News and the Kaycee Optimist.
