By: Illegal immigration opponents are paying for their ballot petitions to be sent to newspaper subscribers in two Washington counties.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports that the Respect for Law Committee paid for 6,000 petitions to be inserted in Monday's newspaper.
The petitions aim to gather signatures for a statewide initiative that would make it harder for illegal immigrants to be hired and access public services. Initiative 1043 needs 241,000 signatures to make the November ballot.
Craig Keller, chairman of the statewide organization Respect Washington, says it also has paid to have its petitions inserted into the Skagit Valley Herald and Yakima Valley Business Times.
