By: Dave Astor Tributes Pour In After 'Peanuts' Creator's Death
Tributes poured in faster than Snoopy's pursuit of the Red Baron as
people learned of 'Peanuts' creator Charles Schulz's death this weekend.
'He was not only the greatest cartoonist who ever lived but probably the
greatest man I ever met,' said 'Mutts' comic creator Patrick McDonnell.
Schulz, 77, died in Santa Rosa, Calif., Feb. 12 ? the night before his
last original Sunday strip appeared. Some press reports listed the cause
of death as colon cancer, while others cited a heart attack.
'Peanuts' started in 1950, and eventually became the most widely
syndicated comic strip in history with more than 2,600 newspapers.
United Media is continuing to distribute reruns.
For more on Schulz and 'Peanuts,' see the Feb. 21 'Syndicate World'
column on this site and the cover story in E&P's Feb. 21 print edition.
