By: E&P Staff Last week, with little fanfare, the satirical newspaper The Onion launched its new online fake-news network with a promo reel and a few clips that will strike a familiar chord with fans of the print edition.
The New York Times' Alexandra Heffernan, in a Monday
column, said the site had "a deadpan premiere ... except deadpan doesn?t do justice to The Onion's still-radical tone."
In one
clip, the newscast's dour anchorman describes a fictitious voyage to the Far East by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, while
another reports in-depth on a "Lucent Technologies" CEO who is said to have lost his $840,000 (and 0.5 percent share of the company) job to an unskilled illegal immigrant (who was willing to work for only $600,000). A
third mock segment looks at a supposed presidential plan to call up Civil War re-enacters to help recruitment for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
