Zell Chops Away At Tribune Tower Corporate Offices, Pink-Slipping HR Employees

By: E&P Staff Tribune Co. human resources employees are getting instead of giving pink slips, the flagship Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

About a dozen HR employees were told their jobs would be eliminated, reported the paper's media columnist, Phil Rosenthal.

Citing unnamed sources, Rosenthal reported that the firings were the first in a string of headcount reductions in the finance, legal, and other back-office departments.

Sam Zell, who led the $8.2 billion transaction that took Tribune private in December, has pledged to reduce the corporate layers at Tribune Tower in Chicago. He has told Tribune's executive vice president and chief administrative officer Gerry Spector to "zero budget" the company to determine what functions are truly needed to be done at the headquarter offices, the Tribune reported.

Rosenthal noted that Zell hinted at the Tower layoffs, telling employees at the chain's South Florida Sun-Sentinel: "If you want to visit the corporate office, you ought to do it in the next month."
