By: E&P Staff Since the King Features comic strip "Zits" debuted in 1997, the main character, Jeremy Duncan, has remained perpetually, and frustratingly (for him, at least) 15.
But now, in an interview with the Washington Post's
Comic Riffs blog published Sunday, "Zits" co-creators Jim Borgman and Jerry Scott acknowledged that on Aug. 14, Jeremy will finally turn 16. King Features is expected to make an official announcement sometime Monday.
"After freezing Jeremy at 15 for over a decade, it just felt like time to cut the kid a break and move on to a different set of challenges and frustrations," Borgman told Michael Cavna of Comic Riffs.
The biggest change, of course, will be the driver's license that Jeremy has been lusting after since the strip debuted. "I think it's going to give us new writing opportunities," Scott told Cavna. "We felt [ age 15] was the maximum frustration age. You think you can run the world and you can't even drive a car. ... there will be more strips that don't involve [Jeremy's] parents ... we're going to get inside his head a little more."
Cavna's full interview with Scott will run later this week.
