By: E&P Staff Wednesday Journal/Chicago Journal LLC, publisher of a weekly recognized by E&P as one of the 2008 "10 That Do It Right," has sold two of the weeklies it rescued from closing last year and has folded another paper.
The group is keeping Chicago Journal, a weekly launched in 1999 for what were then distressed South and West Loop neighborhoods on the verge of gentrification. The flagship Journal was the paper specifically recognized among "10 That Do It Right."
It will also continue to publish Skyline, a paper that it bought from Sun-Times Media Group in January 2008. Sun-Times had planned to close the paper, which serves Near North neighborhoods in Chicago.
"These are the strongest papers in our city group and we are confident in their potential to grow despite this exceptionally tough economy," said Dan Haley, president of Oak Park, Ill.-based Wednesday Journal/Chicago Journal LLC.
But the group is selling the News-Star and Booster weeklies -- two papers also rescued from announced closings by Sun-Times -- after their March 19 editions.
The papers have been bought by Ron Roenigk of Inside Publications, who publishes Inside, a weekly in Chicago's North Center and Lincoln Square neighborhoods.
The paper is closing its Chicago Journal West Town newspaper, which served the Wicker Park, Bucktown and Ukrainian Village neighborhoods. The paper was launched in 2005.
The group publishes community weekly newspapers under the Wednesday Journal flag in the Chicago suburbs of Oak Park and River Forest, plus the Forest Park Review, Riverside Brookfield Landmark and Austin Weekly News. It also publishes three regional parenting magazines: Chicago Parent, Chicago Baby and Chicago Special Parent.
