By: E&P Staff The winners of the 2009 EPpy Awards, the competition sponsored by Editor & Publisher and Mediaweek magazines, were announced this afternoon during a luncheon ceremony during the annual Interactive Newspaper Conference and Trade Show in New Orleans.
Web site of the Boston Globe, the newspaper whose future was still in doubt until early Wednesday morning, took home two of the five awards for which it was a finalist: Best Sports Blog, (for Globe sportswriter Tony Massarotti?s blog, ?Mazz?); and Best Entertainment Web Site (with more than one million unique monthly visitors), a category in which its two finalists, Boston.com/ThingsToDo and Boston.com/ae (Arts & Entertainment), tied for the win. Boston.com had two of the three finalists in the latter category.
The Las Vegas Sun scored two category wins, for Best Newspaper-Affiliated Web Site (with fewer than one million unique monthly visitors); and Best Web Special Feature -- News or Event (with fewer than one million unique monthly visitors) for its ?History of Las Vegas? entry.
ESPN also took home two category wins, for Best Network TV/Cable-Affiliated Web Site and Best Sports Web Site (with more than one million unique monthly visitors).
CNN racked up two wins as well: Best News/Politics Blog, for its ?Political Ticker,? and Best News Web Site (with more than one million unique monthly visitors).
The newspaper winners included USA Today, for which its ?Today in the Sky? won for Best Business Blog; Baltimore City Paper, for Best Weekly Newspaper-Affiliated Web Site (Citypaper.com); the Arizona Daily Star, for Best News Web Site (with fewer than one million unique monthly visitors; and The Wall Street Journal Online, for Best Newspaper-Affiliated Web Site with more than one million unique monthly visitors.
In all, 97 finalists were named in 32 categories, including one new category: The Best Consumer Technology Blog, won by AOL property Engadget.com.
The 2009 EPpy Awards mark the 14th consecutive year of the program, which honors the best Web sites in the media world, including newspapers, TV/cable, radio and magazines. Nearly 400 entries were submitted for this year?s competition, which were evaluated by nearly 50 judges.
