By: Staff Reports National Newspapers Down 17.3%, Dailies Down 6.5%
Advertising spending for all media dropped 5.2% in a comparison
of first quarter 2001 with first quarter 2000, according to
Competitive Media Reporting (CMR) of New York. Total ad spending
for the first quarter fell from $23.8 billion in 2000 to $22.6
billion this year.
National newspapers were down 17.3%, while daily newspapers
dropped 6.5%. Ad spending in Sunday newspapers was down 11.4%
from a year ago.
Despite the overall drop, ad spending was actually up in some
media. Spending on cable TV rose 6.6% and national syndication
spending was up 5.5%. Spending in Sunday magazines rose 1.4%.
Hardest hit was national spot radio, which was down 24.1%.
Network radio followed close behind with an 18.4% drop.
